Welcome to Vienna. The land of refinement and architectural marvels. There is so much to do and see in Vienna but I came for one thing and one thing only: that thing, or rather person, being Empress Sisi. She is my 19th century muse; a woman of dignity, of class, of breathtaking beauty and of wild contradictions. This episode only scratches the surface of Sisi's remarkable story. The rest of it will be tackled in future installments. But for now I invite you on this breathtaking walking tour of downtown vienna. We scamper through the Burggarten, before heading across Maria Theresia platz, sweeping past the Hofburg palace, and finding our stone damsel in the Volksgarten. She wa there, frozen in marble, waiting for us to pick up the thread of her tale, take it over to the Viennese operahouse, the Karlkirche, the Museum Quartier, and finally St. Stephen's famous zsolnay tiled church. We wrap things up with a sweep past Mozart's residence, and a delightfully plump viennese sausage with tangy mustard and nose tingling horseradish; washed down of course with a cold glass of beer.
