Thanks to the folks of Columbia University and Yale University, who have done joint research using the Environment Performance Index (EPI) to rank the cleanest and dirties countries in the world. The index consisted of 40 performance indicators such as pollution, energy, biodiversity, ecosystem, erosion etc. Let’s look at the top 10 cleanest countries in the world in 2022.

10. Germany.
The first country on today’s list is Germany, with an EPI score of 77.2. The country moved up two notches as compared to last year. The most prominent performance indicators contributing to Germany’s ranking are energy, environmental friendliness, and biodiversity.

9. Norway.
Norway has been ranked at number 09 with an EPI score of 77.7; the government is taking all necessary measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30%. Moreover, the country managed to secure perfect scores in drinking water and sanitation; in the air quality index, it was ranked in 5th place with a score of 97.9. Renewable sources generate 97% of Norway's electricity.

8. Sweden.
Sweden occupied the 8th spot with an EPI score of 78.7. All Scandinavian countries are known for their cleanliness and peacefulness, and Sweden is no different; it has remained on the list of the cleanest countries in the world for many consecutive years.

7. Finland.
Finland is another Scandinavian nation that made it to the list; it has been positioned at the 7th spot with a score of 78.9. The country mainly relies on environmentally friendly energy sources for all its energy needs; that’s how it produces minimal air pollution and has excellent air quality.

6. Austria.
This landlocked country in central Europe secured 6th place in the list with an EPI score of 79.60. Austria is filled with greenery; 2/3 of its entire area is covered with dense forests and meadows, which helps the country maintain its air quality index.

5. France.
This western European country is known as the wealthiest country in Europe and the 4th richest nation in the world. France scored 5th place in the world's cleanest country list with an EPI score of 80. Despite being the 3rd largest country on the continent that heavily relies on industrialization, it fulfils 79% of its electricity needs through nuclear energy. It makes it the largest consumer of nuclear power in the world.

4. United Kingdom.
The United Kingdom comprises of four countries: England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Island. It is the fifth richest country in the world with a per capita GDP of $38,591 and the third largest economy in Europe. It has an EPI score of 81.3 and placed at the 4th spot; the country scored well in Marine Protected Areas, water and sanitation and Biome Protection.

3. Switzerland.
Switzerland beat 179 countries with an EPI score of 81.5 and was able to secure 3rd position. This magnificent land in western Europe is famous for its dense forests and wildlife; the Swiss Alps attract many Skii enthusiasts in the winter.

2. Luxembourg.
The first runner-up of today’s list is Luxembourg, with an EPI score of 82.3. This small European country has approx. Population of 650,000 inhabitants, it is also known as the richest country in the world, with a GDP per capita of $140,694.

1: Denmark.
The winner of our list today is Denmark, with an EPI score of 82.50; the country strongly emphasizes on the use of renewable energy sources. Apart from being the world's cleanest country, it also ranked as the 2nd happiest country in the world as per Gallup World Poll.
