Lake Retba

We've heard a lot about the dead sea, about how dense and how far below sea level it is, but did you know that there was a lake in Africa that was just as salty? Lake Retba is a coral pink lake that's situated in Senegal, and it's been a popular tourist destination for a few years now- its pink colour isn't the only interesting thing about it. Salt miners spend over seven hours a day immersed in the lake to harvest salt from it, even though a single bucket only earns them over half a dollar.

Don't worry though, the lake is perfectly safe and gets its beautiful pink color from natural bacteria in the water. It's Lake Retba for visitors but locals call it "Lac Rose" which means "pink lake" in the local language, and if you're looking for the perfect Instagram photo opportunity, you really need to visit this lake.

Güner Lake

You wouldn't believe that a lake could be temporary, but it appears and disappears every year in Austria. The "green lake" is surrounded by mountains and snowy peaks on all sides, but every year close to July, the snow on the peaks melts and runs into the valley, forming the lake. Fresh green water engulfs trees and benches and even the bridge in the garden situated at the bottom, and the clear green hue of the water just adds to the magic.

If you're ever visiting this lake, keep in mind that the government has banned any underwater exploration since 2016. Divers could go explore the underwater park before this, but it was hurting the ecosystem. But that's okay! The pictures we have of a whole park that's seemingly built underwater make you think that it was built for mermaids or mysterious sea creatures.
