The south rim of the Grand Canyon is a great destination an you should visit it if you are in the area.
Some of the best views are actually all to the east - where you can find a campground, a large parking area and the watchtower.

This watchtower is neither old or offers any better views, but has a nice gift shop and some insights on the history of the Grad Canyon.
