Is the insightful story of my family's unending ordeal caused by the European Schengen Tourist Visa granted to us in India by the Embassy of Slovakia.

For our holiday in East Europe - due to Appointments just not opening at Hungary, Austria or Czech Republic in the summer of 2022- we ended up applying via Slovakia.

We were denied to make transit from Arrival to Departure of Dubai Terminal 2, citing "Wizz Air is among the few airlines that do not allow any Transit passengers & transit baggage"

Once at the boarding gate somehow, a new, unexpected shocker slammed us. We were again denied boarding by Wizz Air - second time within 12 hours- citing "Schengen Visa is issued by Slovakia. So you must land in Slovakia only. You can not board the Dubai - Budapest (Hungary) flight"

Then we thought of changing our holiday travel plan entirely. "Which countries allow Indian Passport holders to come in, without a pre-Visa?"
Thailand, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Russia, Serbia,... SERBIA!!

Serbia is a neighboring country to Hungary - just like Croatia, Austria & Slovakia are. Why not go to Belgrade (capital of Serbia) & then attempt entering Hungary via the land border (bus / train)?


Praying ???????? for baggage arrival from Dubai to Belgrade

48+ hours since we left India
Have not changed clothes

After 48+ hours ordeal - both bags arrive in Belgrade from Dubai

Change clothes at last!
Belgrade for 2 days & try going to Budapest tomorrow... Let's see

Many lessons to learn from our experience
But let's enjoy the 1st views of Belgrade!

LESSON # 1
If you're transiting from another country on an airline with different PNR- make sure that your 2nd flight allows inter-terminal baggage transfer!

Wizz Air never informed that it does not allow transit passengers / transit baggage transfer

LESSON # 2

Take PRIOR 24 / 48 hour transit e-Visa of the country IF you're changing FLIGHTS OF DIFFERENT PNR
So that you can collect your baggage from the belt & check in for the 2nd flight

e.g. Wizz Air, Air India Express operate from Dubai, but don't allow transit baggage & passenger transfer

LESSON # 3

ALWAYS ONLY TICK "MULTI ENTRY" option in your Schengen Visa application form.
NEVER EVER tick "SINGLE ENTRY", even if you are going for 1 tourism trip only.

With "MULTI ENTRY" Visa - no limitation of only landing in & entering from the country that granted you Schengen Visa!

LESSON # 4

Indian Passport does not hold much value globally. Hardly 10 good countries that allow entry without a prior Visa to Indian passport holders.

US, Canadian, British passports allow Visa-free access to 150 countries

Belgrade- Central Train Station.
Will we get a train ticket to Budapest?

"NO". No trains between Belgrade to Budapest!

Can we get a Bus from Belgrade to Budapest?

Passport/ Visa checking at the Serbia - Hungary border takes upto 4 hours?!

Belgrade Central Bus Stand- ticket to Budapest?

Several Indians here.. for "DONKEY"?

"2 gaj ki doori, mask hai zaroori" here as well!

Belgrade - Budapest buses are run by Private operators such as Flix Bus - Private operators' booking office is outside

Our passport & visas have been seen - We can travel on Bus from Belgrade (Serbia) to Budapest (Hungary) tomorrow!!

Tickets booked for 4:30pm tomorrow - still 24 hours to see Belgrade!!

24 HOURS LATER (NEXT DAY)

Time for Belgrade to Budapest bus

Retrieving our baggage

Even if you have a Bus ticket, you still have to purchase a separate "platform ticket" to board the bus

Time to board, at last, for Budapest.
3.5 hours later, we'll be at Serbia - Hungary border.

Hoping there is no repeat of what happened in Dubai
(as Schengen visa is issued by Slovakia)
