Graz, located on the southern side of the Alps, is Austria`s second largest city. On this very hot day we did not spend long in its amazing historic core but rather made our way into the suburbs to search out some wonderful highlights. We began with a walk up to the Basilica of Maria Trost. This baroque masterpiece is gloriously decorated architecturally and with amazing paintings. On the western side of the city sits the magnificent renaissance palace of Schloss Eggenburg surrounded by its lovely park. Heading into the city we take the funicular from alongside the river Mur onto the Fortress Hill. The structure in the river is a performance space dating from Graz`s days as European City of Culture. The Lion within the Fortress is a memorial to the defenders who resisted Napoleons armies. The iconic Clock Tower was constructed around 1560 replacing an earlier tower which was first mentioned in the 1200`s. One quirk of the clock are the hands. The longer hand points out the hours and the smaller hand the minutes. This was because those viewing were mainly in the city below and could only see the larger hand. They could at least see an approximate time. The heat was such that afternoon that we ran out of energy before we could revisit the Old Town. As we had visited this lovely place several times, and intend to do so again, we were not too disappointed. The film is still affected by the corrupt memory card so once more I have relied on stills to maintain the continuity of this series.
