The Stubaital (Stubai Valley) lies in the Austrian Alps just to the south of Innsbruck. It was Roberts first trip into Europe in 1969. It was a trip that gave him the urge to travel more and see the world. The first visit, camping in the snow and arriving on Christmas Eve was the first of many magical experiences here. On our six week trip we just had to spend a few nights here. On Day 31 we set out to walk between some of the pretty valley villages, reacquainting ourselves with glorious village churches and wonderful mountain scenery. From the village of Mieders we made use of the cable way to climb to the meadows for glorious views. In those first visits leg work alone could bring us to these places. A short climb led us to wonderful Maria Waldrast, a mountain monastery and refreshment stop. The only disappointment here was the low cloud hiding views of the towering peak of Serles which in fitter days had been a wonderful summit to climb. Our descent via Medraz gave wonderful views and yet another opportunity to sample a local beer. A long, tiring but magical day.
