This walk along part of the World Heritage Trail in the Wachau gorge was in June 2016. On a very hot day we commenced walking in Durnstein after exploring the town. The blue and white tower of the parish church is a dominating feature. We climb first to the castle ruins where Richard the Lionheart, King of England, was held for ransom on his way back from the Holy Land. We then climb further for excellent views over the Danube valley before continuing through forests to eventually emerge in vineyards with more wonderful views. We gradually descend to the village of Weissenkirchen from where we return to our base at Spitz an der Donau.
