The "Almabtrieb" is an annual event in the Austrian Alps. Around 500,000 cows are driven up in the mountains in summer to graze on alpine pastures. In late September and early October, there are concerted cow trains to bring the animals back to their stables down in the valley. If the season went well and there were no accidents on the Alm during the summer, cows are decorated elaborately, and the cow parade is celebrated with festivities in the villages. In many places this Alpine custom has evolved into a major tourist attraction with booths set up along the course to sell local agricultural products and handcraft objects.
