The most recognized landmark of Wachau valley is the Melk Benedictine Abbey, one of the finest examples of baroque architecture in the world. The most important building is its richly decorated church with frescoes painted by the greatest baroque masters, as well as the library comprising about 100 thousand books. Another high baroque masterpiece is Göttweig Abbey. Founded in 1083, it was the reconstruction in the early 18th century to what this abbey owes its splendour. Inside you can find an impressive pipe organ and the fresco by Paul Troger from 1739 which is considered a masterpiece of baroque architecture. Another sightseeing opportunity is a medieval village of Dürnstein set among the Danube river, terraced vineyards and 900 year-old fortification walls. From the village you can climb up to the Dürnstein Castle and enjoy incredible views of the valley from its ruins. Did you know that King Richard I of England was kept as a prisoner here for 1 year? The legend says that he was released after paying a colossal ransom.
