Crowded? Yes, get there early or you won't find parking.
Expensive? Not particularly, but not cheap either.
Beautiful? Yes, very. Quaint and quiet (despite the crowds) and smaller than you might think.
Worth it? Only if you happen to be in the area and want a slow day/half-day to make a stop there.

I often watch drone footage of the Alps, with soft piano music, to fall asleep at night. A beautiful town called Hallstatt appeared, and I saved it to my map.
After driving through the Alps for two days, we found a hotel near the little town. After a night of rest, we planned to visit it in the afternoon.
Moments before starting the drive, I remembered something: "Wasn't there a small town in Austria where the locals were really pissed off that too many tourists came? And they put up a fence to block the view, to discourage tourists?"
After a quick Google search, I found that it was the very town we were about to see. And what's worse is that the reason for all the tourists was because Hallstatt was the inspiration for my most hated film of all time: Frozen.
Despite this, we had come all this way and decided to visit anyways. There was absolutely no parking, so we parked off the side of the road a 40 minute walk from the town. It was harrowing, but we finally arrived to a much more welcoming scene than anticipated.
The signs warning the tourists were very fair, and honestly appreciated. The town had clearly adjusted to the influx of visitors and gently reminded them to respect the residents, but warmly welcomed them to their beautiful town.
Inside the town was lovely and peaceful, although crowded. We ate lunch at a small place that we wandered past, which ended up being one of our favourite food experiences yet. And their Sachertorte was top tier; highly recommend.
After that, we climbed some of the staircases to get to new viewpoints, which were lovely. We didn't do any other activities, and just enjoyed wandering.
In the end, I don't think it's worth travelling here unless you're already in the area and have a car to make a short stop for a day or half-day. If you do go, I would recommend arriving very early in the day to claim a parking spot, wander around for a couple of hours, and then move on. I don't have experience with hotels here, but the town is very tight and not likely to have parking included. Finally, don't be a nuisance if you visit. Leave your drone at home.
