Austria by Train
When travelling in Austria, don’t worry about a car, take the train, it’s so reliable, super-fast, and efficient, plus you don’t have to stress about finding a car park in those cute historic cities.
My daughter Summer and I recently travelled for a week in Austria and had the pleasure of travelling by train. We up-graded to Business Class for 15 - 25 Euro per sector per person on top of the First-Class rate and it was well worth it as you can see in the review, much more space, better seating and privacy.
First leg Vienna (Wien Hbf) to Salzburg Hbf
2.23 hours travel time
Second leg Salzburg HBF to Innsbruck HBF
1.48 hours travel time
Third leg Innsbruck HBF to Zurich Main Station
3.33 hours travel time
We found the second and third legs of our train journey the most scenic, with beautiful alpine mountain, lake, and village vistas along the way.
Austrian Trains come mainly in 3 different classes, each explained briefly below.
Economy Class
Configured, as 4 seats across, mostly around small tables, in groups of either 2 or 4 together, they also offer a heap of twin seats with no table.
Limited luggage areas so can be tight.
First Class
Configured, as 3 seats across, mostly around nice size tables, in groups of either 2 or 4 together, they also offer a heap of twin/single seats with no table.
Comfortable leg room, more space and distance between seats, electoral outlets at every seat
More space for luggage
Business Class
Offered only on some trains. The configuration is individual seats, or groups of 3 in semi-private compartments with low sound/privacy walls. Each carriage only has limited seats, so it’s very spacious, private, and nice, compared to first or economy class.
Leather seat covers, quiet atmosphere, Wi-Fi, electrical outlets at every seat, reading lamps, generous folding tables, and heaps of space.
Includes a free welcome drink at your seat.
Some of the Austrian trains also offer “Quiet Zones” for you to travel and work undisturbed. The rules are – keep your voice down, don’t use your mobile phone and listed to music with headphones.
Austrian Trains or OBB, has a punctuality rate of 97% as per their website and are ranked among the most reliable railways operators in Europe, carrying over 1.3 million passengers each day.
For more information about Austrian Trains, check out the OBB website, its very comprehensive and in English.
