Vehicles have started crossing the alpine Brenner Pass at the Austrian-Italian border on Tuesday morning, as Austria lifted entry restrictions from neighbouring Italy.

The border crossing point was closed for over three months in a bid to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Austria had already relaxed restrictions for travel to some neighbouring states but excluded Italy, due to the infection rate of the country that was one of the worst-hit by the pandemic in Europe.

A travel warning will remain in place for Lombardy, the north Italian region hardest-hit by the coronavirus crisis.

Italy reopened its borders for all members of the Schengen area on June 3, hoping to revive its tourism industry, from which a large share of jobs and businesses depend in the country.

From June 16 onwards, Austria will welcome travellers from 31 countries, including most of Europe, without restrictions.
