Streets of Austria's capital Vienna were seen empty, as doors of schools, galleries, museums, hotels, opera and theatre houses, cafes and non-essential shops were closed starting Tuesday after a second strict lockdown was imposed nationwide due to rapid surge in COVID-19 cases across the country.
Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz announced the new set of more drastic measures on Saturday, as the partial lockdown didn't seem to curb the rapid spread of the coronavirus in Austria to the necessary extent.
Schools have switched to distance learning once again and like kindergartens will offer extra day-care in case of need, while the working population has been strongly encouraged to stay in the home office. All shops, restaurants and leisure time facilities should remain closed until December 6, aside from shops that are responsible for the supply of everyday goods, such as grocery stores, the post offices, banks and pharmacies.
Reportedly, Kurz also asked the citizens to make as few personal contacts as possible, as the partial curfew that has been in place daily between 20:00 and 06:00 has been switched to complete exit restriction, that allows people to leave their houses for specific reasons only. These include buying groceries, visiting doctor or going to work.
