Being interested in the former Iron Curtain border, the crossing point between Hohenau an der March and Moravský Svätý Ján is just the sort of place to attract me. Clearly it attracts others too as there is a pathway which crosses hundreds of kilometres called the Iron Curtain Trail financed by the European Union. As can be seen, I parked my van close by and explored the nearby area.
The bridge we can see today across the March river was opened on 7 July 2005. It is the only road crossing from Austria to Slovakia north of the Danube. It connects with Hohenau Moravský Svätý Ján. After the fall of socialism, a pontoon bridge which was reserved for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes was in use. The single lane Marchbrücke was constructed over a period of two years and has a length of 132 meters. In order to let larger boats pass, the bridge can be raised by 1.6 meters.
