In a country where the youth unemployment rate has soared to a staggering 32.9%, the hope of a foot in the door of economic activity or employment often seems like a mirage for many young South Africans.
But one government-backed initiative aims to prove that practical skills can do more than just educate; they can transform lives. CATHSSETA, the Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality, and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority, has launched a programme that equips young people not only with culinary skills but with a new sense of purpose.
The initiative has already seen 164 young South Africans graduate as internationally recognised artisan chefs, many hailing from rural communities and townships across KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, and beyond. Remarkably, over 90% of these graduates are now employed, with some working right here at home, and others making their mark overseas.
Marks Thibela, CEO of CATHSSETA shares more with two graduates whose lives have been changed by this programme Tebatso Mamalo, who now works in a prestigious local kitchen, and Thandeka Shange, who joins us live from Austria, where she's building a culinary career abroad.
