Cetara is a town and comune in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy. It is located in the territory of the Amalfi Coast.

Characterized to be a village of fishermen (especially of tuna), its name take origins probably from the Latin word Cetaria (in Greek Ketèia), meaning almadraba (in Italian tonnara); or cetari, meaning fishmongers of big fishes.

Recently, the Cetarese lawyer Costantino Montesanto puts forward the hypothesis, that the toponym actually derives from the term Caeditaria, that is "pertinenza della caedita", that is a cleared place.

Furthermore, the origin could be traced back to the term citrus, that is lemon, a very important crop for centuries not only in the country but throughout the Amalfi Coast.

Already the settlement in 880 of a group of Muslim armed men, with the blessing of the bishop of Naples Atanasio II, who could thus hit his local enemies of Capua, Salerno, Spoleto or Benevento, in 1551 Cetara was attacked by the Turkish armies who massacred of those who did not want to embark on their service.
After the tragic episode, following the order of the Spanish viceroy in 1567 to build 19 watchtowers along the Amalfi coast to avert the Arab danger, a mighty tower was also erected in Cetara (today restored and used as a sea museum), characteristic symbol of the charming town.

The natural and artistic beauties, thanks to the geographical position, have made Cetara a Unesco heritage, with the Amalfi Coast.
