Austria has plenty of Christmas markets. But the biggest is on Vienna’s Rathausplatz, the square in front of the town hall.
A large Christmas tree dominates the centre with dozens of surrounding stalls offering the full spectrum of seasonal offerings.

Christmas market Am Hof is fairly central, and located on a square surrounded by historic buildings (including the one where Mozart first performed in Vienna). A section dedicated to independent artists serves as an excellent source of unique gift ideas.

For most of the year, the Freyung hosts a much-loved organic farm market. At Christmas, this converts to the Altwiener Christkindlmarkt. Consider it a gentler alternative to the larger Rathausplatz.
