A3 - Virtual Vanguard: Using Digital Twin Technology to Preserve and Present History
Digital documentation and media are advancing historical interpretation, education, and preservation. This session will feature practitioners and interpreters in conversation. Hear from the creator of Gaspee VR, an educational virtual reality module that enables students to experience the 1772 uprising from the perspective of participants in the story. Discover how 3D imaging of monuments at Roger Williams Park and of artifacts recovered from an 18th-century shipwreck can recover unseen details and inspire new insights. Hear (and see!) how 3D tours of interiors at the Newport Mansions allow virtual visitors to “go behind the ropes” for a brand-new museum experience, first as a reaction to Covid closures and now as a necessary mission-based offering.

Adam Blumenthal, Visiting Scientist, Brown University
Leslie B. Jones, Director of Museum Affairs and Chief Curator, The Preservation Society of Newport County
Chris Wilczewski, Founder and CEO, Functional 3D
