Dodoma is the capital city of Tanzania, covering an area of 2,576 km square and it is known to be the eighth-most populated city in Tanzania. Being at the center of Tanzania, the city of Dodoma is one of the most important cities in the country hosting the supreme legislature of the country: the parliament with more than 393 members, but also the city has more than 2000 government offices which shifted from Dar es Salaam to Tanzania’s new capital city: Dodoma. It does have some tourist attractions such as; The Kondoa Rock- Art Sites, The Gaddafi Mosque, Lion Rocks and Dodoma Cultural Tourism Sites. It is twinned with Jaipur in India, Bangui in Central African Republic, Watsa in DRC, and Linz in Austria.

Dodoma hosts the supreme legislature of the country, the parliament with the current speaker of the national assembly being Tulia Ackson who presides over a unicameral assembly of 393 members. In 1973, the Tanzanian government announced that the capital would be moved from Dar es Salaam to a more central location which is Dodoma to better serve the needs of the people.Visiting the parliament of Tanzania in Dodoma is rewarding, as it boasts architectural beauty of its kind. Visiting the parliament, you will have to apply indicating visitation date and number of visitors. All tours and programs to the parliament are free and visitors will have a Question & Answers session, civic education programs and exhibitions delivering important information about the parliamentary work.

Dodoma came from the name “Idodomya” which means, “it has sunk” in the Gogo language of Tanzania. Legend has it that an elephant came to drink some water at a nearby river. As the elephant came slowly walking towards the river and drew closer to the river it finally reached the river and started drinking water and, as it was drinking water it got stuck in the mud with the villagers witnessing everything from the beginning to the end. The elephant struggled to get out of the mud but it failed to get out and sank until it finally disappeared not to be seen again. As the villagers exclaimed in amazement, “Idodomya” and from that time the place was known as Idodomya and later modified to Dodoma, making history to this day.

Dodoma is rich in culture and being the government administrative centre, it is populated with different ethnic groups living in different parts of the city calling it home. The indigenous ethnic groups are the Gogo, Rangi, and Sandawe. Despite having many tribes from all around the country living with each other, this city is proud to be known for being rich in its culture! They people in Dodoma take pride in learning from each other in different aspects such as; Parenting, relationships, marriage, food, lifestyle and many more. The diversity has made the city a place worth the experience. There are various Dodoma Cultural Tourism programs which give visitors an exposure to the real African traditional life and the culture.

This Tanzania’s capital city is also known for its state-of-the-art hotels and restaurants that cook mouth watering food. Some of the city’s famous restaurants are Leone I’ Africano Pizzeria, Nav’s Restaurant and Pub, Chef Asili Café, Dodoma Carnival, Harvana Food Affairs and many others. With tourists coming every year it is no question that they enjoy good meals. Dodoma is also responsible for the production of its own food crops like rice, cassava, maize, bananas, potatoes, and millet. You can have an experience of a lifetime in the city and, literally, have the best of both worlds by eating like the locals and learning more of their culture or going to those wonderful restaurants and eating an enjoyable meal with a great view.

Dodoma is a place worthy to be called a second home. The indigenous people who are Rangi, Gogo and Sandawe, have tried their best to treat visitors and foreigners like their own people.
