KOOMBANA BAY, AUSTRALIA — A bottlenose dolphin wearing a blue t-shirt was spotted swimming in Western Australia, and wildlife conservation officials believe it stems from an act of animal cruelty.

A concerned citizen caught sight of the dolphin on January 26, and quickly contacted authorities. Officials aren’t sure what happened, but the day the report came in happened to be Australia Day.

The idea of a dolphin wearing a t-shirt might seem harmless, but if the shirt covered the dolphin’s blowhole, it could have restricted its breathing. Officials say it’s unlikely the dolphin slid into the shirt on its own, leading them to believe it was an “intentional act” of animal cruelty.

The animal was photographed swimming in Koombana Bay off the southwest coast of Australia. The dolphin has not been seen since, and the Parks and Wildlife office is asking the public to look out for it in the waters, as it may be in trouble.
