This is SUCH a beautiful city!!! Obviously there's so much to do in Vienna, and there's no way to fit it all in one day. But we certainly tried!! Come along with us as we spent the day exploring the capital city of Austria, VIENNA!!

As always, we started off with a great cup of coffee & to us that always means local. We headed to Alt Wien K offee. They have over 40 varieties of coffee & had a ton of great reviews online so we figured we’d grab a cup to go & try it out. And also because we thought their logo looked pretty cool & we’re suckers for good marketing!

Right next to Alt Wien Kaffee is the famous Naschmarkt. Naschmarkt is a century old open-air market Vienna’s largest & most well-known market with about 120 stands & restaurants to choose from. It stretches for almost a mile & you can find anything you could ever need here. The market has a slogan saying “If the Naschmarkt doesn’t have it, then you don’t need it”, & it makes total sense while the locals feel this way.

We've headed further into the city center to see what we'd probably call the White House of Austria. The Imperial Palace of Hofburg was the home to the Hapsburg dynasty during their reign from the 13th century all the way until 1918. Since 1948, it’s been repurposed to the primary residence & workplace of the President of Austria. The surrounding area has numerous government buildings but none stand out quite like this one.

Now that it’s finally spring in Europe we felt like we had to go walk through the Volksgarten. The Volksgarten is a public park within the inner ring of Vienna & has been exploding with color every spring since it was finished being construction back in 1823. It’s home to various flowers, monuments, & cafes & provides such a nice place to enjoy the outdoors.

Right next to the Volksgarten is the Vienna City Hall, which serves as the seat of the local government. Unfortunately it had some construction outside of it, but that just means we'll have to come back during Christmas when it really shines!

Next our plan is to try and walk in at Cafe Central. It’s been in service since 1876 & was frequented often by Sigmund Freud during the early 20th century. Its location in a Neo-renaissance building makes this the most regal cafe in Vienna & we’re here to have a Wiener Melange. This drink is pretty similar to a cappuccino but is a half cup of brewed coffee with a half cup of cream, topped with milk foam.

Next up is a building that serves as the centerpiece of the Viennese crown, St. Stephens Cathedral. This cathedral is the most important religious building in Vienna & stands on the ruins of two earlier churches. St. Stephens Cathedral, or Stephansdom, is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vienna & has been here since the 12th century. Entry to the cathedral is free, however there are a few different areas that are only accessed with the purchase of tickets.

After Stephansdom, we headed over to the Vienna State Opera where we'd booked a tour. This opera house opened in 1869 & holds a little over 1,700 people with a little more room in standing areas. This opera house is one of the more prominent & famous in the world, with the likes of Enrico Caruso & Luciano Pavarotti gracing its stage.

We're wrapping the afternoon up at Schönbrunn Palace. The Schönbrunn Palace is probably the thing we wish we’d gotten to do most because it’s so highly rated on everyones Vienna travel guides. This was the main summer residence for the Hapsburg rulers & has over 1400 rooms. This was the biggest palace in Austria & attracts well over 4 million visitors every year. While we aren’t making it inside the palace this trip, this will be at the top of our list next time we’re in Vienna.

We’d seen some high ratings for a restaurant in central Vienna called Griechenbeisl so we made a reservation for tonight & Trey’s on a mission to try Wiener schnitzel for the first time. This restaurant is dubbed the oldest Inn in town, & was enjoyed by Mark Twain, Beethoven, Mozart, Pavarotti, & even Johnny Cash!! Griechenbeisl has been serving people for 550 years so if there’s ever a place to go in Vienna for authentic local cuisine then this is definitely the place!!
