France: Hundreds protest closure of gyms due to COVID restrictions in Paris

Hundreds of demonstrators took to the street of Paris to protest the closing of gyms, on Friday. The measure is among a new set of restrictions recently introduced to slow the latest spike in COVID-19 cases.

"Today we have many staff members who are worried about their jobs. Financially we know that there is almost 30 percent of the sports industry which is ready to file for bankruptcy in the coming months", explained Guillaume Le Floch, gym owner and co-organiser of the protest.

France has placed 69 departments in 'Alert Zones.' The Paris region is in the 'High Alert Zone' with gyms not allowed to open and bars required to close at 22:00 (20:00 GMT). General public gatherings are limited to ten people. The latest set of restrictions went into effect on September 28th and will last for two weeks pending any evolution of the sanitary situation.

As of Friday, the COVID-19 death toll in France stands at 32,019, with 12,148 cases being confirmed in the last 24 hours according to French Health Ministry figures.
