A castle was built here in the 6th century, from which the name Graz derives (Slovenian gradec means small castle).Graz received the city coat of arms in 1245. From 1379 to 1619 the city was the seat of the Habsburg residence and withstood several Ottoman attacks during this period. In 2003 Graz was the European Capital of Culture; In 2015 it became the city of the Reformation in Europe.
Graz has developed into a university city with a total of almost 60,000 students (as of January 2, 2017). It was chosen as a human rights city and is the recipient of the Europe Prize.
