A walk around my hometown Graz in the Christmas season. Graz is Austria’s second largest city and the provincial capital of Styria. Graz is often overlooked by visitors traveling to cities like Vienna, Salzburg or Innsbruck, which are especially popular with tourists. The city’s beautiful old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and can be considered a hidden gem that is still off the beaten track.

Graz has a population of around 280,000 and is also a big student town with over 50,000 students. It is located in the south-east of Austria on the Mur river.

In the Christmas season, Graz offers variously themed Christmas markets, events and attractions. A huge Advent calendar is projected on the façade of the City Hall. For many visitors and residents, the ice nativity scene in the Landhaus courtyard is the highlight of the Christmas season. All Christmas markets are located within walking distance.
