What is Graz Austria known for?

Graz is the capital city of the southern Austrian province of Styria. At its heart is Hauptplatz, the medieval old town’s main square. Shops and restaurants line the narrow surrounding streets, which blend Renaissance and baroque architecture. A funicular leads up Schlossberg, the town hill, to the Uhrturm, a centuries-old clock tower. Across the River Mur, futuristic Kunsthaus Graz exhibits contemporary art.
Graz is known as a college and university city, with four colleges and four universities. Combined, the city is home to more than 60,000 students. Its historic centre (Altstadt) is one of the best-preserved city centres in Central Europe. In 1999, the city's historic centre was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites and in 2010 the designation was expanded to include Eggenberg Palace on the western edge of the city. Graz was designated the Cultural Capital of Europe in 2003 and became a City of Culinary Delights in 2008.
Kunsthaus (“Art Gallery”) Graz (opened 2003), which features contemporary art; one devoted to bodybuilder, actor, and politician Arnold Schwarzenegger (a native of Graz); and a children’s museum. Other museums focus on locks and keys, toys, railways, tramways, aviation, and criminology. Each autumn Graz hosts a contemporary arts festival. The city was designated the European cultural capital for 2003.
