(1 Jun 2020) Greece  lifted lockdown measures for hotels on Monday as the country ramped up preparations for the tourism season starting in two weeks.
Hotels with a 12-month operating license were allowed to reopen but many chose to remain closed until closer to the start of the tourism season, citing low bookings.
At the Acropolian Spirit Boutique Hotel , hotel worker Mailinda Kaci prepared a room overlooking the Acropolis for their first guests: an Austrian couple.
Hotel manager, Panagiotis Betis, decided to fully open the hotel despite only having two reservations for this week.
The five-star hotel NJV Athens Plaza was one of three hotels chosen by Greek authorities to remain open during the lockdown.
For two months it has lodged airline crews from the few cargo planes that landed in the Greek capital.
In the past couple of days, the hotel has had some Cypriots and Israeli guests.
But customers from its key markets, the US and China, are not expected this year.
Its General Manager Vana Lazarakou said there won't be any serious tourism until at least January 2021.
International flights will resume to Athens and Greece's second-largest city Thessaloniki on June 15, expanding to the rest of the country on July 1st.
Screening procedures for arriving passengers will be based on guidelines issued by a European Union flight safety authority, with arrivals from low-infection countries being subjected only to random testing.
