Grossglockner High Alpine Road at 12640 feet, is the highest paved road in Austria. On our Europe Drive Holiday, from Tyrol to Salzburg, we drove on this road from Italy onwards through this wonderful road. We took the Winklen, Heiligenblut, Fusch road and turned right at 311, took all of 5 hours, on a stop, shoot photographs, stop, enjoy, chill kind of drive. It was cold for us on September, 2023, temp around 5 degrees.
The road is great, the toll is steep at 35 Euros, but I feel its worth it. Its narrow at sections, and the sharp twists and switchbacks would give you an adrenaline rush for sure, not for the faint hearted and inexperienced drivers. We had lots of cyclists and bikers onrushing at us on bends and downhill, so you need to drive defensively. Any car with 1000 cc can do this, may be little slowly, but with a powerful car, it would be easy on the switchbacks. The mountains, hills, green meadows, flowers, ice and snow make a great spectacle for those who love to click. You get a few waterfalls and can see the glacier from near. There are places to eat in between and take in the beauty as you sit and enjoy the scenery.
