Hallstatt is a village of around eight hundred people on the shore of the Hallstätter See in the Austrian Salzkammergut — and it may be the most photographed village in the Alps. The image everyone takes is the same: the church spire reflected in the still lake, the pastel houses stacked against the cliff face, the mountains rising behind. The photograph does not prepare you for standing in front of it.

In this episode of The Continental Traveler, we explore Hallstatt slowly: the lake that shifts from pale silver at dawn to deep green at noon to copper at sunset, the salt mines above the village that have been worked for over seven thousand years — making this one of the oldest industrial sites on Earth — and the prehistoric cemetery whose excavation in the nineteenth century gave the Hallstatt culture its name and transformed our understanding of Iron Age Europe.

The Salzkammergut rewards slow exploration: the Dachstein glacier above, the spa town of Bad Ischl where Habsburg emperors summered, and the Gosausee with its different angle on the same mountains.

Stay overnight. The crowds thin by evening, and the village in the early morning — when mist sits on the lake — belongs entirely to those who remained.
