Hallstatt isn’t just a place you visit. It’s a place that makes you pause and question if what you’re seeing is real. Tucked between the still, glass-like waters of Lake Hallstatt and the towering Dachstein Alps, the village looks like it was painted by hand. Sixteenth-century wooden houses with flower-filled balconies stack themselves along the narrow shoreline, as if they’re trying to get closer to the mountains. There’s no space between the lake and the cliffs — the Alps rise 2,000 meters straight up, with no foothills to soften them.
