Castle Bítov was constructed in the 11th century of the former Great-Moravia fortress by royal czech house of Přemyslid.
First written record is from 1046 as a first of the castles in the area which protected south border of the Czech Kingdom.
In the 13th century castle was rebuild into a bigger one, there are still few original structures from that time.
In the 14th century after Přemyslids died out the castle was handed to house of Lichtenburk and the soon build another castle next to Bítov, Cornštejn.
In the next 250 years the castle was one of the main residences of the house.
From 1576 till 1612 castle was in hands of austrian nobleman Wolf Strein, his son Hanuš Wolfart rebuild castle into rennaisance residence with gardens. Reconstruction itself and its high standards soon ruined the financial reserves and castle was sold.
In the 17.th - 18.th centruy castle was rebuild into fortified baroque chateau during ownership of the house of Dauns
In the 1906 castle is sold to Haas family and last noble owner of castle Bítov.
Last member who owned the castle Baron Jiří Julius Haas was livind in the castle after he returned from WW1.
Another nobles disregard him as his family gains noble status only in 20th century.
Baron had many mistresses and never was married. He stated that he likes more animals than people. His castle was guarded by plenty dogs which had a very comfortable life here.
After his dogs dogs died all of them had either grave around the castle or they were stuffed and displayd in castle - 59 stuffed dogs can be still found in the castle today.
After WW2 communists wanted to confiscated th castle and move baron back to Austria, but he refused and most likely commited suicide in the castle but its 100% sure what happened.
The rest of the animal were either taken by farmes or released in the wild.
From 1945 state owns the castle and from 1949 its open to public.
