From centuries-old carnival celebrations to outdoor attractions and activities, this holiday region around the small town of Imst at the foot of the Lechtal Alps offers much for visitors to see and do.


Rich in history, the small town of Imst offers visitors magnificent views of the surrounding region and is a haven for holidaymakers in search of both culture and action.

Thanks to its position at the foot of the Lechtal Alps at an altitude of 827m it enjoys many hours of sunshine and draws guests with a combination of traditions, customs, museums and galleries.

Imst is famous throughout the region and beyond for its “Schemenlaufen”, a carnival procession which sees local men and boys dress up in colourful costumes and parade through the streets.

While the “Schemenlaufen” happens only once every four years, the Hoch-Imst ski and hiking area draws visitors in both summer and winter.

Modern cable cars transport outdoor enthusiasts up to its ski slopes and hiking trails, while the town itself is home to a rock climbing centre open throughout the year.

Fans of geology should visit the nearby Rosengartenschlucht, a 1.5km gorge just outside Imst which is one of the most important biotopes in Tirol and a popular excursion for nature lovers, walkers and amateur geologists.

There are nine villages in the Imst region, each of which has its own unique charm.

For example, Schönwies offers hikers magnificent views of the Alpine landscape along the Panoramasteig trail and the toboggan run, while visitors to Karrösten can explore the geology trail or hone their rock climbing skills at the indoor boulder centre.

From the village of Roppen it is just a short drive to the Area 47 outdoor adventure park packed with adrenaline-pumping activities.
