Innsbruck is the capital city of Tyrol in western Austria. It is is a city in the Alps that's long been a destination for winter sports. It is located in the Inn valley, at its junction with the Wipp valley, which provides access to the Brenner Pass some 30 km to the south.

Innsbruck lies about halfway between Munich in Germany and Verona in Italy. Located in the broad valley between high mountains, the so-called North Chain in the Karwendel Alps to the north, and the Patscherkofel and Serles to the south.

Innsbruck is an internationally renowned winter sports centre, and hosted the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics as well as the 1984 and 1988 Winter Paralympics. Innsbruck also hosted the first Winter Youth Olympics in 2012.

Innsbruck is also known for its Imperial and modern architecture. The futuristic, Zaha Hadid-designed Hungerburgbahn funicular climbs 2,256m from the city center up to the Nordpark resort for skiing in winter and hiking or mountaineering in warmer months.
The name translates as "Inn bridge".
