Interesting facts about Schönbrunn Palace - Vienna . Number 1 tourist attraction in Vienna is 1,441 rooms Schönbrunn Palace built during the reign of Empress Maria Theresa. The rococo palace, which belongs to the Republic of Austria now, used to be the main summer residence of Austrian monarchs of the Habsburg dynasty which reigned in various parts of Europe for over 600 years until the end of the monarchy in 1918. The palace park and its gardens are open from 6:30 AM and you can enter it for free. Inside the gardens you can find a few structures such as the impressive Neptune fountain completed in 1781 which stands at the foot of the Gloriette hill crowned by the Gloriette structure completed in 1775. You can sit in its café next to the nearby pond and enjoy one of the best-loved sights in Vienna overlooking the palace, gardens and the city. Inside the palace you can find there richly decorated 40 meters long Great gallery with frescoes, various dining rooms, Sissie’s dressing room and salon as well as Franz Joseph’s bedroom in which he died in 1916. It is not allowed neither to shoot videos nor take pictures of the palace’s interior. There is even a zoo which is home to 700 species and 8000 animals. Opened in 1752, it is the world’s oldest zoo that is still in operation.
