Marienkirche serves as a branch of the city parish, a rector’s church entrusted to the Jesuit order. In 1478, it was consecrated in honor of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On March 18, 1522, this Late Gothic building, along with its monastery structures, was destroyed by fire.
In 1543, the Dominicans left Steyr due to the Reformation, and in 1559, their monastery was rebuilt to house a Protestant Latin school. During the Counter-Reformation, on November 10, 1624, the church was returned to the Dominican Order. From 1642 to 1647, the Dominican church was redesigned in the Baroque style, giving it its present appearance.
