1. Tintagel Castle, England
Tintagel Castle is still a ferociously popular tourist destination. Everyone relishes the sea air, ragged cliffs, bracing winds… and the magical aura that pervades the place.

2. Bam Citadel, Iran
Situated in a vast desert plateau in the southern reaches of Iran, the Bam Citadel rises up like a Phoenix again from the intimating earthquake after being almost entirely leveled in the 2003 Bam Earthquake.

3. Leap Castle, Ireland
Gloomy Leap castle in Coolderry, Ireland has a grim history awash with blood and misery. Dubbed the most haunted Castle in Ireland, many of its residents have suffered bloody unfortunate deaths, and the site seems to be something of a curse to inherit.

4. Predjema Castle, Slovenia
Predjema castle in Slovenia is truly unique. Begun in the Middle Ages and massively expanded in the renaissance, Predjema is set into a cliff face in an innovative attempt to use the landscape as a natural defence.

The lovely Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos, or Fort of the Christian Monarchs, in Cordoba, is a popular and picturesque castle with a dark past.

6. Moosham Castle, Austria
Moosham castle looks romantic nestled in the wooded foothills of Austria near Salzburg. Yet it is principally known for its long history of dangerous superstition. The area was gripped by endless wars during the Middle Ages, and the castle changed hands many times.

7. Castel Del Monte, Italy
The Castel del Monte in Southern Italy was built by Frederick II, a powerful Holy Roman Emperor who inherited kingdoms all over Europe. The castle is something of a mystery because of its unusual design. It has no moat or drawbridge, and no outer walls, and it is located in a place of no strategic importance.

8. Masyaf Castle, Syria
If you have ever played the first Assassin’s Creed videogame, you may be familiar with this castle. Few people know that the assassins who inspired the popular franchise were a real group of people, who lived in their own breakaway state centred around a series of mountain-top castles.

9. Edinburgh Castle, Scotland
One of the UK’s foremost historical attractions, Edinburgh castle has a long and interesting history, and has revealed its share of secrets.

10. Hohenzollern, Germany
A picturesque castle with a ghostly resident, Hohenzollern is Germany’s spooky Neo-gothic masterpiece. Built and rebuilt since the early middle ages, the castle is remarkably striking, and was one of the inspirations for Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.
