(8 Aug 2020) The coronavirus pandemic has slashed summer tourism in Croatia by half, but some top destinations don't seem to mind.
In the walled city of Dubrovnik, the main tourism spot on Croatia's Adriatic Sea coast famous as a filming location for The Game of Thrones series, locals say the crisis could serve as an opportunity to rethink future strategies.
The majestic medieval town has been so overwhelmed by tourists and cruise ships in recent years that crowds have barely been able to move through the narrow stone streets.
Sometimes they have had to queue up outside the city gates, waiting for their turn to enter.
But this summer it's all different. Nowadays, tourists are able to stroll slowly down the famous central Stradun street, sit in some of the cafes, or just relax. This year many of the tourists in Dubrovnik are - unusually - from Croatia itself.
Tourism workers say that Dubrovnik should use the opportunity to refocus its tourism bid and create a more sustainable offer for fewer numbers of people.
Dubrovnik mayor Mato Frankovic said tourists should come now to see the city as it always should be - without overcrowded beaches or streets.
Ivan Vukovic, a tour guide, said there were now 80-90% fewer tourists than last year, mostly from Germany, Austria and Croatia itself.
Missing are the Americans, the Australians and the British, put off from travelling because of the coronavirus.
Croatian officials have said they are happy with the way the summer tourism season has turned out following the disastrous plunge during the initial outbreak in the spring.
Tourism revenue is down by at least half compared with last year, although that's better than many other holiday destinations in Europe.
