Parliament is expected to call for more EU action to support organisations providing aid and food to the most deprived in Europe.

The recent sharp increase in energy prices due to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, has resulted in a rise of inflation and living costs in the EU, including major price increases for food.
At least one in every three people living in a private household in the EU has difficulties making ends meet. According to the latest data from Eurostat, 8.3% of the EU population were unable to afford a healthy meal every second day - one percentage point higher compared to 2021.

This means that more people are dependent on organisations providing support and food. These organisations have recently warned they can no longer cope with inflation, forcing them to reduce the number of people they can help.

The capacity to afford a meal with meat, chicken, fish or a vegetarian equivalent every second day is among the criteria used at a household level to calculate the severe material and social deprivation rate and is one of the headline indicators of the European Pillar of Social Rights.
