Riópar is a Spanish municipality located southeast of the Iberian peninsula , in the province of Albacete , within the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha . Riopar is located in the region of the Sierra de Alcaraz . Riopar is 118 km from the provincial capital. Riopar is integrated in the community of services Sierra de Segura .

Nearby are the Chorros del Río Mundo , birth of the homonymous river, which in the rainy season forms spectacular waterfalls, true explosions of water and light, known in the area as the blowout . The area is integrated into the Natural Park of the Calares del Río Mundo and La Sima .

Together with the towns of Villapalacios , Bienservida , Villaverde de Guadalimar and Cotillas , it formed part of the Señorío de las Cinco Villas , a historical sub-district within the extensive Alfoz de Alcaraz , which belonged to the Marquesado de Villena . The Marquis was annexed by the Catholic Monarchs in the Crown of Castile , within the Kingdom of Murcia . The municipality comprises a historic-cultural center, the present hamlet of Riópar Viejo, the old Rivus Oppae (or fox river), which was the medieval village, currently restored, located a few kilometers west of the modern Riópar. And the present Riópar, with the old denomination of the Real Bronze and Brass Factories of San Juan de Riópar , that comes from a project of colonization of century XVIII , due to the establishment of the workers of the real mining and factory that settled down in This place, in time of Carlos III .

The main economic activity of the municipality of Riopar is rural tourism , with an elaborate infrastructure of establishments, consisting of more than 50 of them. Some 25 restaurants where you can taste the rich dishes of the gastronomy of the area and a multitude of rural accommodations, both in the main municipality and throughout the city. The hotel offer completes a 3 star hotel with spa . Riopar main tourist attractions are the Natural Park of the Calares del Río Mundo and La Sima in the same locality, the natural landscape that the mountain offers and the proximity of the artistic and monumental population of Alcaraz .

The economy of Riopar was driven in the past by metallurgy, based on local calamine mining to obtain zinc and copper for brass and bronze smelters at the El Laminador ironworks. This industry dates back to 1772 when, on the authorization of King Charles III to the Austrian engineer (nationalized Spanish) Juan Jorge Graubner , the construction and installations of a factory for the production of brass, known as the Royal Bronze and Brass Factories of San Juan de Riópar . For its location, Riopar was chosen a place next to an abundant water course, where the natural resources of raw material, water, Wood and calamine (from a nearby deposit), will not be lacking. This ironworks was the first Spanish manufacture and the second European in brass and bronze, after the one of Gosslar in Germany of which, unlike the one of Riópar, no rest remains. At the end of the nineteenth century the calamine mine lost profitability, factories regressed and after some efforts for their maintenance and recovery by private companies, closed definitively in 1993 . Today, the old tradition is maintained through the manufacture and sale of its famous decorative articles, lamps and bronze furniture, as the main market of traditional rustic and souvenirs .
