This documentary from the Austrian public broadcaster (ORF) shows how the gigantic railway network developed of the Danube monarchy with its many main and branch lines. Impressive engineering masterpieces were built to connect the steppes of Galicia with the coastal towns of the Adriatic.

This documentary also highlights the many effects of railroad construction, such as the rise of summer resorts and tourism in many different regions, the standardization of time, or the enormous importance of railways for military and warfare. After all, the First World War is also regarded as the first railroad war.

The documentary is also a journey through a sunken empire along its thousands upon thousands of miles of railroad tracks that lead us to the cities and villages, forests and mountains, vast plains and rocky coasts under the double-headed eagle of Austria-Hungary.
