Turkey is one of the key transit points and destinations for refugees. At its peak in 2015, an estimated 800,000 people fleeing the Middle East, Asia and Africa paid smugglers to be carried by boats launched from Turkish beaches in the hope of reaching the Greek islands and Europe.
