The city is 30 km north of the provincial capital of Graz, directly on the Mur, the state's most important river, where the Middle Mur Valley narrows between the Upper Styrian traffic junction of Bruck an der Mur and Graz. Here the Mur forms a gorge between the high mountains of the Gleinalpe and the Hochlantsch and offers picturesque views in the bends. The region is also easily accessible from the north-west through the Gleinalm tunnel of the Pyhrnautobahn.
