Salzburg's main sources of income were salt extraction, trade and gold-mining.

The composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was born and raised in Salzburg when it was part of the Prince-Archbishopric of Salzburg within the Holy Roman Empire. The Trapp Family, including Georg von Trapp, Maria von Trapp, and their children lived in Salzburg until they fled to the United States following the Nazi takeover.
