Salzburg World Heritage - a special value for humanity
Not only is Salzburg rich in sights, the city on the Salzach also has a long history as a metropolis of culture and the arts. The cultural heritage of the Baroque city has its origins in the lively exchanges with neighboring states to the south, and in particular Italy.
Salzburg was known as a melting pot of northern and southern European cultures and arts. Craftsmen and artists have been coming to Salzburg since the dawn of time. Many Baroque buildings, such as the Cathedral of Salzburg, are due to Italian architects, such as Vincenzo Scamozzi and Santino Solari. It is not by chance that Salzburg is called the “Rome of the North”. This title is also due to certain privileges: the Archbishop of Salzburg, like a Pope, had the power to appoint the bishops of his four bishoprics himself. And he reigned until 1806 over the second largest ecclesiastical state in the world. Only Rome was bigger. Religious buildings of great Baroque beauty charm visitors from all over the world. Let's mention other little gems of art, such as the bourgeois houses of the Middle Ages and the spacious Italian squares. These religious or secular buildings are particularly well maintained, which, in large part, contributed to their admission to the World Heritage List.
Fans agree: Salzburg is the city of “The Sound of Music”! Not only did the Trapp family actually live here, but this classic was filmed in and around town. Walk in the footsteps of Maria von Trapp, aka Julie Andrews!
The Salzburg Festival: An international cultural festival with the big stars
“The whole city becomes a stage”, is how Max Reinhardt, Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Richard Strauss, the founders of the Salzburg Festival, described their intention just 100 years ago. Their wish has come true: in the meantime, the Salzburg Festival is considered to be one of the most famous performing arts festivals in the world. For several weeks in summer, the city of 150,000 inhabitants becomes the navel of the world of culture. This annual transformation, Salzburg owes it to the Festival: a Festival recognized throughout the world for its immense musical quality.
Stroll through the streets of the city center in the footsteps of Mozart!
When it comes to Mozart, pretty much all of downtown Salzburg is a walkable museum. Start your discovery walk at the statue of Mozart, which has been watching over Mozartplatz since 1842. At number 8 is the last apartment of Mozart's widow, Constance. She also lived in the house that is Café Tomaselli today, on the corner of Alter Markt and Churfürststraße. By making a detour through the extraordinary Saint Pierre cemetery, you will see the tomb of Mozart's sister, Nannerl. In addition, she lived at number 18 of the Universitätsplatz. On the right bank of the city center, Mozart's father, Leopold, and Constance are buried in the Saint Sébastien cemetery.
Salzburg is much more than the city of Mozart or the city of the Festival. In the most important places of interest in the city, you will be immersed in history, in captivating stories, in surprising stories. The Hohensalzburg fortress, the Mozart museums, Getreidegasse street or Hellbrunn, are among the favorite places in Salzburg. A visit to the Top 10 will give you an ideal overview of this city, a UNESCO world cultural heritage site…
