Sassolungo/Langkofel Circuit Hike, Dolomites, South Tyrol

South Tyrol is part of Italy but as it is very close to Austria many people there speak Austrian/German. That's why the mountain in this video's hike has two names: Sassolungo (Italian) and Langkofel (German). However, both names translate to "long peak" or "long rock". And that's how it looks like: it's a very looooong peak :-D

Our hike starts at the Sella Pass carpark at 2153m.
It follows trail nr 525 up to Rifugio Toni Demetz (Forcella del Sassolungo) at 2685m.
Then a steep descent down the "Langkofelscharte" to Rifugio Vicenta (Langkofelhütte) at 2253m.
Trail nr 526 towards Rifugio Comici leads along the northern wall of Sassolungo to Col de Mesdi at 2114m.
We then followed trail 526a directly under the mountain.
That part didn't feel so safe, as it was very icy and pieces of ice were falling down the mountain.
If you want to avoid that section, you can follow trail 526 a bit lower.
526 and 526a both lead to Rifugio Comici.
All the rifugios were closed in October so after Rifugio Comici we just continued trail 526 back to Sella Pass carpark.

This hike was really spectacular!
Maybe it gets more crowded when the cable cars are operating in summer and the rifugios are all open. But we enjoyed having the trails almost for ourselves!
We just met a couple of other hikers along the way.
For the steep snowy/icy descent after Rifugio Toni Demetz we were happy to have "Grödels" (small crampons). Also trail 526 very close to the mountain felt much safer with those crampons under our feet...
