Salzburger Altstadt; We absolutely LOVED old town Salzburg. The town is quite small but oh so vibrant! There are numerous coffee and pastry shops, restaurants, and high quality shops to sample and enjoy. The sites are stunning, including cathedrals, monuments, and other amazing architectural treasures to enjoy. As the birthplace of Mozart and the site where The Sound of Music was filmed, music is around every corner. We plan to visit again someday.

Fortress Hohensalzburg:
Lots to see and do here. The funicular is super quick but fun for kids to ride up. Great views of the city and mountains. The different museums had lots of variety of things to learn, see, touch. Everything from weapons, history, music, cooking, etc. The kids loved the cannons on display. Very helpful staff. A child in our party scraped their knee and the staff was so kind with first aid to give us bandages. We had lunch at one of the restaurants which had good selection and kids menus too. The view in the restaurant was amazing and food was great.

Untersberg:
A must-do if you are in Salzburg. We bought a Salzburg Card at the tourist information office: a bus ride to and from the Untersberg and a round trip on the cable car and you’ve almost recouped the cost of your card - and there’s still loads more places you can visit/ buses to ride for free using the card during your chosen 24 or 48 hour period.

We chose the most gloriously clear June day to go. Half an hour on the number 25 bus and you’re there. (This bus also stops at the Zoo and the Hellbrunn Palace, so you could combine a trip there too). The short cable car trip was exciting, if not a little alarming for some, but the views at the top are stunning. Keep an eye out for mountain goats on the hillsides from the cable car. Depending on your fitness levels you can wander for miles, be sure of suitable footwear! There are informative signs about the wonderful alpine flora, and we saw plenty of butterflies and birds, and some maps describing the different peaks and lakes that can be seen from the summit.

There’s a couple of café places at the top, but one imagines they can get busy. If you get the chance, do go.
