WATCH: Mont Blanc: An Impossible Climb https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWM5dVbRO20
From Hannibal to Napoleon, the Alps first divided Europeans before uniting them. Today, eight states share responsibility for this extraordinary region, which also brings its own unique problems. How do the Alpine states deal with the protection of the territory, global warming and the Covid 19 pandemic, for instance? Where will the upheaval in the tourism industry lead?
Many Europeans had to give up their beloved winter sports holidays because of the Coronavirus pandemic. ARTE takes viewers on a cinematic trek through the Alps, whose 1,200-kilometre massif crosses eight countries: Austria, Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, Slovenia, Monaco and Liechtenstein.
For a long time, this high mountain range was considered insurmountable, but in the meantime it has developed into an important link between the countries of Europe and has an excellent infrastructure.
Man has made these landscapes his own, but has he gone too far in the process? As climate change impressively shows, nature always wins the upper hand in the end: by the end of the 21st century, only 20 of the current 320 ski resorts in France are expected to remain, and all Alpine winter sports areas will have to reinvent themselves.
