The European Movement International and the European Investment Bank will hold its next online panel discussion, entitled Investing in the Future of Europe: The EU’s plan for recovery and long-term resilience, on Wednesday, 1 July 2020 (from 15:30-16:30 CET). This will be the first digital online discussion from this series of events.

This on-line event will bring together business, EU officials and government representatives. Now more than ever, Europe needs to support its economy so we can guarantee stability and foster growth. As the COVID-19 pandemic puts the European Union’s strength to the test, its institutions are taking measures to cushion the economy from the impact of the crisis.

The panel is composed of :
– Valérie Hayer MEP, member of the EP’s negotiating team for the next long-term EU budget and Own Resources reform | European Parliament
– Thomas Östros, Vice President | European Investment Bank
– Luc Tholoniat, Principal Adviser | Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs, European Commission

Moderated by BBC journalist and presenter, Joe Lynam

Protecting Europe’s economic stability from a historic global pandemic presents several unique and challenging questions. This panel discussion, composed of representatives from the European Investment Bank, the European Institutions and civil society will tackle the following: How can new investments be future-proof and geared to deliver the EU’s long-term objectives, as well cushion Europe from the economic effects of the pandemic? How can the EU further enhance its financial tools to channel resources in the short- and long-run to make European societies and economies to thrive? How can the EU’s tools be strengthened so they can support sustainable development, foster innovation and investment, and create jobs over the coming years?

Since 2017, this series of panel discussions has been held across the EU as well as in other neighbouring countries. Designed to discuss the benefits of EU integration and membership, this is also an opportunity to engage broader civil society to debate about the transformative power and direct benefits of the EU.
