The Republic of Austria, commonly called just Austria, is a country in southern Central Europe, located in the Eastern Alps. It is a federation of nine states, one of which is the capital Vienna, the most populous city and state. The others are Upper Austria, Lower Austria, Styria, Carinthia, Tyrol, Salzburg, Vorarlberg and Burgenland.

Austria is a landlocked country and borders Germany to the northwest, the Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia to the northeast, Hungary to the east, Slovenia and Italy to the south, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west. The country has an area of 83,871 km2 (32,383 sq mi) and a population of 9 million. It is the third richest country in the European Union after Luxembourg and Germany.
