Hallstatt is a traveler’s paradise. The alpine ambience, the terraced 500-year-old homes and the quaint locales add to its beauty. Aside from strolling the streets of the town, you can visit the local Salt Mine or the Giant Ice Caves!
In this video, I have given an overview of a day trip to Hallstatt & Ice Caves from Salzburg by bus. It takes 2.15 hours by bus to reach Hallstatt. You can buy your bus tickets at the Salzburg train/bus station or directly from the driver. Make sure to put Hallstatt Lahn as the destination which is the bus station. Expect to pay around 35 USD for a round trip. You can get the bus time table and prebook bus tickets online at https://salzburg-verkehr.at/
Once you reach Hallstatt Lahn, instead of getting down, I recommend you stay put in bus and travel to Dachstein Visitor Center which is at 10 minutes bus ride from Hallstatt town. The Ice cave and sky lift tickets are available at the Dachstein Tourist Center. The cable ride & Dachstein Ice caves combo ticket cost around 44 USD.
Hallstatt is a small town and you can cover the entire place within an hour. Strolling is the best way to spend time here. However, if it interests you, take a boat ride in the lake or visit the town’s bone chapel.
You can also travel to Hallstatt by Train from Salzburg, but it will drop you off on the other side of the lake and you will need a boat trip to reach Hallstatt. I prefer the bus option as it saves you about half an hour each way.
Bus Numbers to Remember – 150 to Bad Ischal -542 to Gosausee-543 to Hallstatt and Dachstein Visitor Center). It's very easy to make these changes as the bus stands next to each other.
